Garrafon,
aquatic and recreational natural park located in Punta Sur in Isla
Mujeres.
The
island's southernmost tip, is known for its lovely reefs and spectacular
cliffs (highest elevation in the Yucatan and home to an ancient
Maya temple). These cliffs and their vantage points offer dazzling
views of the island.
The
Garrafón Park organization is very aware of the need to protect
our environment. We have established a series of conservation programs
and constantly promote efforts to make people aware of the need
to conserve natural resources.
The
park is actively involved in the preservation of local plant and
wildlife species through efforts to minimize human impact on their
habitats. We constantly monitor reef activity keeping tabs on the
health and development of its inhabitants. The information we collect
is added to a continually updated databank of photographic records
used to catalog life-forms on the reef. Were proud to say
that with our help the reefs biodiversity is growing.
Our
conservation effort also takes in resident and migratory bird species.
We have built feeding facilities for them and take care to use only
environmentally friendly products. Care is also taken to control
noise levels, especially during nesting season.
Our
gardening team not only maintains the parks outdoor appearance,
they also actively protect its native plants. Special care is taken
to avoid disturbing their natural cycles and in making sure that
species used by birds for feeding and nesting are always available.
The park has its own nursery whose plants are used in reforestation
projects.
